Sahyadri: Negligence on the part of the doctors

Location/place: Pune

Sahyadri Bopodi Hospital has some major drawbacks/inefficiencies, which has led to a huge disappointment to my family. And most regretfully, my father had to suffer pain and stress for several hours.

Just to give you a background, my father has paralysis since May 2012 and was treated at CHL Apollo Indore. He was admitted to Sahyadri Bopodi on 17th Jul 2012 for physiotherapy. All these period he was on Foley’s catheter and it was replaced every 15 days, initially at CHL Apollo and later and Aditya Birla Pune. And there were no issues during the replacement of catheter. Next due date to replace the catheter was 21stJul and since he was in Sahyadri hospital, we requested to replace it there itself.

On 23rd Jul at around 12:15 pm, Dr. Rohini tried to replace the catheter but failed. The wrong insertion of catheter caused internal injury and my father started bleeding. After that she called another doctor who also tried catheterization and it failed, then they decided to call urologist(outside consultant). We would have shifted him immediately to another hospital but the staff was keep telling us that the urologist will be here anytime, but the urologist took almost 1.5 hours to reach hospital and by the time he reached hospital it was already 2:30 pm and my father was in severe pain and stress as he could not pass the urine for 8 long hours (the catheter wasclipped since 6 am).

The urologist also made one failed attempt to insert thecatheter and decided to insert the needle from stomach to pass the urine. He told us that we need to keep it like this for next 2-3 days and observe andthen decide what to do next, which we were not quite satisfied.

Finally, we had to rush him to Aditya Birla (at around 4pm) and the catheterization was done successfully within 10 minutes!

Following are my complaints:

1] Inefficient doctors: Three failed catheterization attempts clearly show that hospitalhas inefficient doctors.

2] Negligence on the part of the doctors/management: Even though it was very clear that patientis on Warfarin and there is no urologist and neurologist available to handlethe emergency, patient was treated by a BAMS doctor.

3] Overall delay in providing appropriate treatment: In spite of us following up with the Hospitalon our complaints, the appropriate treatment has taken an insane amount oftime. This delay and confusion caused is the biggest reason for the traumasuffered by my father and my family.

4] Inadequate facilities: I was asked to bring everything from a medical store eventhough it was an emergency. Also, couple of times I was given the wrong prescriptions which delayed the treatment. You can confirm this from theurologist as he was also frustrated with the staff and the facilities.

5] No discount as adoctor: My father is a MBBS doctor and served his entire life treating thousands of patients in Indian army and government hospitals and he was notgiven a single rupee discount in the hospital.

My family is extremely disappointed with the hospital and suggesting following:

1. Legal action against the hospital and Claims for all the expenses towardsthe treatment of my father in Aditya Birla

2. Action against thetreating doctors, who are inefficient and do not have experience to handleemergencies

3. Approach the consumercourt and media and bring this case to their notice

Will appreciate an early response in this regard.
