RTU awards gold medals to defaulters of AICTE norms

Jaipur: In a major goof-up, the Rajasthan Technical University has awarded gold medals to those students who deserved punishment for violating AICTE norms in the convocation held in March 2012.
According to information on the RTU website, Vinesh Agarwal and Imran Khan was awarded gold medal for securing first position in M-Tech in power system and computer engineering branch respectively by UPSC chairman D P Agarwal.
The website also revealed in the academic section that both were teaching engineering in colleges while pursuing M Tech. Agarwal has joined Shree Balaji College of Engineering and Technology in 2008 and at a same time he was working as a associate professor in ITM College in Banswara since 2008.
As per the AICTE rule, no technical degree can be pursued on distance learning mode. The body also make the provision of punishment for candidate and college who found guilty of felicitating such practice.
While talking to TOI, Agarwal claimed ignorance over any such an AICTE rule which bars candidate from pursuing M-Tech degree on distance learning mode. “I have attended classes on every weekend and on weekdays I taught engineering in college,” Agarwal admitted. Khan pursued M-Tech from Swami Keshwanand Institute of Technology in 2008 while teaching as assistant professor in Ajmer Intitute of Technology in 2007. The distance between the two institutes is 300 kms which is next to impossible for him travel everyday.
R P Yadav, vice-chancellor of RTU, admitted that many students awarded M-Tech degrees were defaulters. “The university will initiate a thorough enquiry in the case and defaulters will be penalised,” Yadav added.
According to RTU rules, engineering colleges have to mark the name of those students who have not fulfilled 75% attendance in theory and practical classes.
